Family Guy this week

One of the more interesting things I've figured out how to do with MythTV is stream TV episodes from the house. Amazingly enough, it doesn't take that much bandwidth to stream decent quality MPEG-4. This makes my lunch hour a little more entertaining.

So today during lunch I watched last night's Family Guy, definitely the best episode this season. The D&D roleplaying reference was awesome. Maybe I'll clip that part out and share it.

Time keeps moving

It is a funny thing about time. After enough of it passes, one day you read about an event for the first time and realize that you used to get invited to said events. Then the realization hits you that enough time has passed that friends aren't really friends any longer, just acquaintances that you once knew in a town where you once lived.

Things are going well in our new world though. Anna's birthday was a few days ago and we went to one of our favorite places in town (Silvercreek), it was really good. Plus, since it was Spring Break for the students in town, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Work is still going well, today we picked out the candidates we wanted to interview for the open programmer position we have.

It snowed here on Anna's birthday and put a serious crimp in our plans for the garden in the backyard. Hopefully this frost/snow nonsense stops soon so we can get started... I imagine along with that nice weather will come a new crop of a pictures (It's hard to get motivated to go take anything when its so unreasonably cold).

In other news, Anna was offered three jobs for the summer. Two were paid positions. One was unpaid. Two were in Champaign. One was in Bloomington. She accepted a paid position here in town at a pretty large, well known firm (Meyer Capel). I'm really glad that all worked out well, she was really worried for a little while, but I had faith ;-)

Nathan, Taxes, Ebay

I put up all the pictures we took of my nephew Nathan while we were in Colorado. You can see them all at Nathan's Pictures . Some pretty nice ones, I might post process a few and share them.

My W2 for taxes FINALLY came. It turns out it had been mistakeningly sent to our old address, and of course must have had 'Please do not forward' on it. I filed our first tax return as a married couple, and we are getting a pretty decent refund back. We're channeling it all back into credit debt though.

In an attempt to get rid of some of the extra stuff lying around, I put my old 17" LCD on Ebay. I actually ended up doing really well!

Not much else is going on. I spent most of the last days at work putting the finishing touches on a communication layer that parses output from Cisco Catalyst switches running CatalystOS. Now I have to begin on a layer for Cisco switches running IOS. I also started exploring nHibernate. Its really, really neat/useful. Say you have some sort of an object that you want to store in a database. You make an XML file that describes how this object's properties map into columns of a table on the database server and it handles the rest! Whenever you change a property of the object, nHibernate is ready to commit the changes back into the database. The amount of coding it saves you on a big project is mind boggling!
